“A church born from military whispers,” I began, gesturing towards the Gereja Katolik ST. Aloysius Gonzaga. “Imagine a time, the 1960s, when the Indonesian Army envisioned homes for its personnel in Cijantung. Catholic soldiers, far from their usual places of worship, began to gather. Initially, just 12 families, they yearned for a spiritual home closer than Bidaracina or the Cathedral. The Gereja Katolik ST. Aloysius Gonzaga’s story is one of persistence, faith, and a touch of military pragmatism.” I paused, letting the weight of the statement settle. “The first masses were held in a private home in 1962, led by a priest from the Army’s Catholic Spiritual Care Center. Can you picture it? A small gathering, huddled together, sharing their faith in the heart of a growing community. As the community grew, so did the need for a more permanent space. Army facilities became makeshift chapels – a classroom in an elementary school, the army clinic, even a mess hall shared with Protestants. The Gereja Katolik ST. Aloysius Gonzaga’s roots are deeply intertwined with the army’s support.” I pointed towards a section of the church grounds. “Even the schools established here, SMP Gatot Soebroto and later SMAK Ignatius Slamet Riyadi, played a crucial role. They provided spaces for worship and education, further solidifying the Catholic presence in Cijantung.” I continued, leading the group closer to the church. “Officially, Cijantung became a parish in 1979, the 33rd in Jakarta, under the patronage of St. Aloysius Gonzaga. The choice of patron saint is significant. St. Aloysius, with his military upbringing, resonated with the community’s origins. The current church building, completed in 1980, stands as a testament to their dedication and perseverance. It was even inaugurated by the Jakarta Governor at the time.” I smiled. “Over the years, the Gereja Katolik ST. Aloysius Gonzaga has undergone renovations, expansions, and even witnessed the birth of a new parish, St. John Vianney in Cilangkap. It continues to serve the community, offering daily and weekly masses, a beacon of faith in the bustling city of Jakarta. Its journey from those initial 12 families to the thriving community you see today is a story of faith, resilience, and a unique partnership with the Indonesian Army.”
