How about stepping into a place where faith and architecture blend seamlessly? Here we are at Gereja Katolik Santo Yakobus. This church stands as a testament to the Catholic community in Kelapa Gading. It reflects their dedication and architectural innovation.
Gereja Katolik Santo Yakobus is more than just a building. It is a spiritual home for many. The church is located in North Jakarta. It falls under the Archdiocese of Jakarta. The church is dedicated to Saint James. He was one of Jesus’ twelve apostles.
Originally built in 1986, Gereja Katolik Santo Yakobus underwent significant renovations. These renovations were completed in early 2010. The updates accommodated the growing number of parishioners. They also improved the comfort during services.
Let’s talk about some interesting facts. During the 2009 renovations, the architects preserved the original triangular roof. They collaborated with the same architect from the 1986 construction. A key change was adding a second floor. Air conditioning was installed for better comfort.
The church’s rededication on January 7, 2010, was led by Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Madya TNI Agus Suhartono. Bishop Agung Koajutor Jakarta, Mgr Ignatius Suharyo, blessed the church on January 16, 2010.
Gereja Katolik Santo Yakobus achieved a unique record during its renovation. It earned a MURI record for the most saint stained glass windows. There are 72 windows in total. Eztu Glass created these beautiful windows.
The church grounds cover 4,680 square meters. There is also a parking area of 3,151 square meters. Gereja Katolik Santo Yakobus can accommodate approximately 2,200 worshipers. This includes 1,800 on the main floor and 400 on the balcony.
Notice the bell tower. It is named “Menara Leopoldo”. This honors Leopoldo Girelli. He was the Apostolic Nuncio to Indonesia. He dedicated the tower on July 24, 2010.
Gereja Katolik Santo Yakobus also features a 24-hour adoration room. It is near the sacristy and the Goa Santa Maria Bunda Segala Bangsa. This grotto was blessed on May 31, 2010. R.P. Antonius Gunardi Prayitna, M.S.F., the parish priest of Kelapa Gading, led the blessing. Inside, an audio-video room broadcasts Mass. It also displays song lyrics.
Look around at the statues. They represent various saints. Near the altar, you will find statues of Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary. A Pieta statue is also present.
Since August 15, 2022, R.D. Romanus Heri Santoso leads the Kelapa Gading Parish. He previously served in Kelapa Gading. It was his first parish after ordination.
Today, Gereja Katolik Santo Yakobus continues to serve its community. It offers daily and weekly Masses. These services are held in Indonesian.
