The Gereja Katolik Santo Andreas Kim Tae Gon is more than just a church. It’s a place of historical significance. It holds the distinction of being the first church in Indonesia dedicated to a non-European saint. This is Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon the first native Korean priest.
The church’s construction was no simple undertaking. The project began in 2012. The cornerstone and first pilings were blessed in 2014 by Archbishop Ignatius Suharyo. Twelve pilings represented the twelve apostles. Stones came from various Indonesian churches and Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon’s tomb in Korea. Relics of Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon arrived in 2016. These included a vertebra. The inaugural mass was held in August 2017. The official dedication followed a month later.
The Gereja Katolik Santo Andreas Kim Tae Gon is visually stunning. Its elliptical shape resembles two hands in prayer. Three levels feature two balconies. One balcony is a soundproof area for children. The altar’s curved motif symbolizes the Holy Eucharist. Three arches represent the Trinity. Stained glass windows depict the Holy Spirit and the twelve apostles. The main entrance showcases Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. The tabernacle is not made of gold as rumored but of gilded iron.
Statues adorn the interior and exterior. Inside are statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary. Outside are a Pietà and a Holy Family sculpture. Saint Peter and Saint Paul flank the main entrance. A large statue of Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon stands proudly in the courtyard. A Grotto of Mary graces the right side of the grounds. Stations of the Cross are located inside and outside the church.
