Gereja Katolik Santa Maria Imakulata

From a simple chapel to a magnificent church. That’s the story of Gereja Katolik Santa Maria Imakulata in Jakarta. This Catholic parish church, nestled within the Citra Garden 3 housing complex, has a history as inspiring as its architecture. Gereja Katolik Santa Maria Imakulata wasn’t always the grand structure you see before you. It began as a series of prayer gatherings spread across different locations. These included the Gereja Trinitas in Cengkareng, a chapel at Kodam Jaya in Kalideres, the Seraphine Bakti Utama School building, and the Gereja Santo Vincentius Pallotti in Dadap. The need for a dedicated space for the growing community led the Cengkareng Parish Council to purchase land in 1999. This land would eventually become the home of Gereja Katolik Santa Maria Imakulata. The journey from land purchase to a consecrated church was long. The Church Construction Committee was formed in 2003. The building permit was finally issued in 2010, followed by the laying of the first stone on March 13th of the same year. Construction faced some unforeseen challenges, delaying the first piling until January 31, 2011. The roof was finally closed on September 10, 2011. Gereja Katolik Santa Maria Imakulata officially opened its doors on September 8, 2012. The inauguration was led by then-Governor of Jakarta, Fauzi Bowo. Three months later, on December 8, 2012, Archbishop Ignatius Suharyo blessed the church on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The church’s unique oval shape, with its distinctive open cleft, symbolizes the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, conceived without sin. The ground floor houses a serene Gua Maria (Grotto of Mary) and a chapel, as well as a dedicated space for Eucharistic adoration. The main church hall, located on the second floor, can accommodate 850 worshippers. A mezzanine balcony adds further capacity for around 445 people. The striking 5.5-meter Benedictus Cross dominates the sanctuary. The church also features 35 windows depicting 18 events from Mary’s life. Fourteen Stations of the Cross adorn the interior walls. A diorama of the Stations of the Cross can also be found outside. Gereja Katolik Santa Maria Imakulata offers weekly masses in the morning, afternoon, and evening. The church stands as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of the Catholic community in Kalideres.
