Did you know that the Gereja HKBP Slipi’s story begins not with grand architecture but with humble house-to-house services? This very spot now filled with the sounds of worship and community was once just a collection of homes. In 1963 a small group of Batak Christian families living around Slipi Palmerah and Petamburan in West Jakarta had a dream. They yearned for a place to gather for their faith. They began holding services in homes. This small act of faith laid the foundation for the Gereja HKBP Slipi.
The Gereja HKBP Slipi’s journey was not without its challenges. Initially services moved to the SMP Negeri 16 Palmerah school building. This makeshift space served for a year. But the growing congregation needed more. Then came the tireless work of the construction committees. They faced obstacles. Their first attempts to build were unsuccessful. Yet their faith persevered. The persistent efforts of those early members and their unwavering determination helped secure a plot of land.
On June 7 1965 the Gereja HKBP Slipi received a 720 square meter plot from the Department of Public Works. This land marked a turning point. The first simple church building finally emerged. It was a humble structure only 8 by 12 meters. This small building signified a major step forward for the church’s development. Over the years the Gereja HKBP Slipi has seen several renovations. These renovations reflect the church’s growth and the changing needs of the congregation.
From its humble beginnings as house-to-house services the Gereja HKBP Slipi has grown into the established institution we see today. It’s a place of worship.
