“Ever wondered how a small seed of faith can grow into a worldwide fellowship?” That’s the story of Gereja GSJA. Today we stand before Gereja GSJA in Jakarta. It is part of a larger movement. This movement is known as Gereja Sidang-Sidang Jemaat Allah di Indonesia. It is often shortened to GSJA.
GSJA’s roots trace back to the “Bethel Indies Zending”. The authorities recognized it on April 4 1941. Later, it became “The Assemblies of God in Indonesia”. The Department of Justice approved this on February 10 1951.
The founders were missionaries from the United States. Their names were Kenneth G. Short, Ralph M. Devin and Raymond Arthur Busby. These men laid the foundation for what GSJA is today. In 1959, a significant change occurred. Pdt Soemardi Stefanus became the first Indonesian Chairman. This marked a shift toward local leadership.
GSJA’s mission is clear. It preaches the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It establishes congregations based on the Bible. Until 2011, its vision was ambitious. It aimed to create 300 new city churches. It also wanted to create 1200 new rural churches and 20000 cell groups.
GSJA’s structure is a blend of synodal and congregational forms. This means that while there is an overarching organization, local churches have significant autonomy. The organization can appoint, transfer, and dismiss pastors. Local churches can support and choose their pastors. They can manage their affairs based on their regulations.
Gereja GSJA is part of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship. This is the world’s largest Pentecostal denomination. Globally, GSJA has over 61 million members. They are spread across 130 countries. There are 300000 ministers and 300000 churches. GSJA is present in Africa, Asia Pacific, Eurasia, Europe, the Americas and the Caribbean.
The logo of GSJA carries deep meaning. The shield symbolizes God’s protection. Red represents the blood of Jesus Christ. The shield’s heart shape signifies love. The words “Gereja Sidang-Sidang Jemaat Allah di Indonesia” indicate leadership and guidance. A book with “Injil Sepenuh” signifies the Bible. The GSJA font is friendly, not conservative. Black on white represents firmness.
The World Assemblies of God Fellowship coordinates congresses every three years. Leaders discuss important issues. These meetings are open to all GSJA members. They celebrate past blessings and seek future guidance.
The GSJA continues to spread its message of faith and community. It is still growing. From its humble beginnings, it has become a global force. As you stand here, remember the journey.
