Gereja Gerakan Pantekosta’s roots trace back to Rev. Johannes Gerhard Thiessen. He was a missionary from the Netherlands. Thiessen arrived in Indonesia in 1901. Initially, he served as a teacher in North Sumatra. But his path took a transformative turn.
In 1921, Thiessen moved to Java. He joined forces with other Pentecostal pioneers. Together they established Gereja Gerakan Pantekosta in Cepu. This marked the beginning of a significant religious movement in Indonesia.
From Cepu, the church’s influence spread. It reached Surabaya by April 12, 1923. Then it expanded to Bandung, West Java. The first Pinksterbeweging church found its home on Jl. Marjuk No. 11 in Bandung. It was named “Bethel”. The first GGP Congress took place in 1960.
Rev. Johannes Gerhard Thiessen was born in Kitchkas, Ukraine. He was born on November 22, 1869. He graduated from Seminary Theologia St. Chrischona in Switzerland. Thiessen also studied medicine in Rotterdam. He married Anna Maria Vink. Together they embarked on their missionary journey.
Thiessen initially served the Batak people in North Sumatra. He provided both spiritual guidance and healthcare. He founded churches and hospitals. After his service in Sumatra concluded in 1916, he returned to the Netherlands with his family.
The Pentecostal movement’s revival touched Thiessen deeply. He received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. This revitalized his mission to spread Pentecostalism. His wife, Anna Maria, also experienced this baptism.
In 1921, Thiessen and his family returned to Indonesia. They were sent by Gerrit Roelof Polman. Polman was the leader of the Pinksterbeweging in the Netherlands. Thiessen brought a new vision to Java. Other Pentecostal figures joined him. William Bernard from Liverpool and Weenink Van Loon also supported Thiessen’s work.
The early days of Gereja Gerakan Pantekosta saw significant growth. In 1923, a revival occurred in Cepu. Many experienced the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. This event solidified March 29, 1923, as a foundational date for the Pinksterbeweging.
From Bandung, Thiessen continued his ministry. He established a base and spread the Pentecostal message. The movement gained momentum. It expanded throughout Java and beyond.
Today, Gereja Gerakan Pantekosta continues to thrive. It has expanded to various provinces across Indonesia. Its central office stands on Jl. Kramat Pulo No. 22B in Jakarta. This reflects its ongoing commitment to its mission.
