From its humble beginnings in Surabaya in 1952 the Gereja Bethel Injil Sepenuh GBIS stands as a testament to faith resilience and growth. Its story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s a narrative woven with threads of spiritual awakening conflict and ultimate triumph.
The Gereja Bethel Injil Sepenuh emerged from a schism within the larger Pentecostal Church of Indonesia. Dissatisfaction with the existing church’s spiritual climate and leadership led a group of 22 pastors including the influential H L Senduk to break away. They sought a more dynamic and independent path. They chose the name Gereja Bethel Injil Sepenuh which translates to Bethel Full Gospel Church. This reflected their commitment to a Pentecostal faith centered on the experience of the Holy Spirit.
F G Van Gessel a prominent figure in the early Pentecostal movement in Indonesia was selected as the spiritual leader. Senduk took on the organizational role. Van Gessel’s extensive experience laid the groundwork for the church’s initial growth. Senduk who ministered in Jakarta provided essential leadership and grounding. He shaped the church’s identity and direction. This collaborative leadership was crucial in establishing the Gereja Bethel Injil Sepenuh’s early foundations.
However this period of early growth wasn’t without its struggles. Internal conflicts and external pressures tested the church’s resolve. A major crisis erupted around 1968 and 1969. A decision by the Minister of Religious Affairs threatened the very existence of the Gereja Bethel Injil Sepenuh. They faced the impossible choice to compromise their beliefs or risk complete dissolution.
Through intense prayer and fasting the Gereja Bethel Injil Sepenuh found a way forward. This challenging period strengthened their commitment. On October 6 1970 in Sukabumi West Java a new chapter began. Senduk and his associates formed the Gereja Bethel Indonesia GBI a separate entity. The GBI soon received official government recognition in 1972. The name change marked not just a new organization but a renewed focus on their beliefs.
The Gereja Bethel Injil Sepenuh’s journey though marked by division ultimately led to the flourishing of the GBI. Its history is a powerful example of the resilience of faith the enduring power of prayer and the continuing impact of spiritual leadership. This church’s story isn’t over. It continues to impact countless lives. The Gereja Bethel Injil Sepenuh continues to serve as a testament to the transformative power of faith.
