“Imagine a sanctuary” is what I thought when I first saw Gereja Bethel Indonesia Jemaat Rawasengon. This church is part of a larger story. It is a story of faith and community in Indonesia. Gereja Bethel Indonesia means Indonesian Bethel Church. It is also known as Bethel Full Gospel Church of God.
Let’s step back in time. American missionaries brought Pentecostal ideas to Indonesia in 1921. In 1924, they founded the Union of Pentecostal Churches. This group later became the Pentecostal Church of Indonesia. A split happened in 1946. A group broke away. They created Bethel Full Gospel Church. On February 5 1967, Bethel Full Gospel Church joined with Church of God. But disagreements arose. On October 6 1970, the church re-registered as Bethel Church of Indonesia. The government officially recognized it on December 9 1972.
Gereja Bethel Indonesia is a Pentecostal church. It emphasizes the Bible’s inspiration. It also highlights the Trinity and Christ’s dual nature. Baptism and communion are important practices. The church stresses baptism with the Holy Spirit. They also believe in divine healing. This shows the power of Christ’s resurrection.
By 1998, Gereja Bethel Indonesia had 725000 members. These members worshiped in 1320 churches. By 2012, it boasted 5000 churches and 3 million members. About 100000 members lived abroad. Many Indonesian Chinese belong to Gereja Bethel Indonesia. Half of the members are Chinese people living in Indonesia.
The Badan Pengurus Daerah DKI Jakarta oversees Gereja Bethel Indonesia in Jakarta. This group helps local churches. It makes sure they follow GBI’s vision. The BPD ensures churches adhere to GBI’s values. It offers training and resources. The BPD connects local churches with the central synod. It also assists churches facing difficulties.
Consider the dedication of its leaders. Pdt. Kiky Tjahjadi leads the BPD in Jakarta. He works with a team of pastors. These leaders guide the churches. They ensure the churches grow spiritually.
Today Gereja Bethel Indonesia Jemaat Rawasengon stands as a testament. It represents faith and community. Its story includes unity and growth. It reflects the spirit of Pentecostalism in Indonesia. It shows the devotion of its members.
