Can you feel the gentle hum of faith resonating from the very stones of Gereja Bethel? Gereja Bethel Indonesia abbreviated as GBI is a group of Christian Pentecostal churches in Indonesia. It is a member of Church of God. The headquarters of the organisation is in Jakarta.
Gereja Bethel. also known as Bethel Full Gospel Church of God. began its story in 1952 in Sukabumi Indonesia. American missionaries brought Pentecostal doctrines to Indonesia in 1921. The Union of Pentecostal Churches was founded in 1924. It was later renamed to Pentecostal Church of Indonesia.
In 1946 a group split from the Pentecostal Church of Indonesia. They founded Bethel Full Gospel Church. This marked the beginning of what would become Gereja Bethel. On February 5 1967 Bethel Full Gospel Church signed a contract of unification with Church of God.
However disagreements arose among the leaders. On October 6 1970 the church was re registered under the name Bethel Church of Indonesia. The Ministry of Religious Affairs officially registered the church under writ No. 41 on December 9 1972.
The church has seen considerable growth over the years. By 1998 Gereja Bethel numbered 725000 believers in 1320 churches. By 2010 this number had increased to 2.5 million. In 2012 it had 5000 churches and 3 million members and 100000 abroad. Half of the members are Chinese people living in Indonesia.
In 2003 Gereja Bethel inaugurated a large temple in Jakarta. It has a seating capacity of 10000. The Indonesian Bethel Church is part of Pentecostalism. Gereja Bethel emphasizes baptism with the Holy Spirit. They also emphasize the practice of divine healing. These are seen as demonstrations of the Resurrection Power of Christ.
Theological training is important. It prepares future ministers. This training is conducted by Bethel Seminary in Jakarta. It also takes place at Kharisma school of theology. A number of other institutions are also involved.
The COVID 19 pandemic brought challenges. Yet Gereja Bethel saw it as an opportunity for spiritual awakening. The church focused on revitalizing faith. They viewed the pandemic as a catalyst for growth. Even during the pandemic the GBI built 659 new churches. This included 409 pioneer churches.

Seminars and virtual prayer meetings were also increased. New forms of prayer fellowship were developed. Cell group worship online teaching and preaching also increased.
