Lost in the embrace of Budapest’s rolling hills stands Gercse. A forgotten village now a quiet corner of the city’s second district. Its story is whispered on the wind that rustles through the trees. A story etched in stone and soil.

Gercse wasn’t always a forgotten place. Records show its first mention in 1212. A small village it thrived for centuries. Farmers and skilled craftsmen made their homes there. They cultivated the slopes of the surrounding hills. Their lives were woven into the fabric of medieval Hungary.

Then came the 16th century. The Ottoman Turks invaded. Gercse felt their wrath. The village was devastated. Its people scattered. Its buildings reduced to rubble. Only the church remained standing a testament to faith in the face of destruction.

This church the Gercsepusztai Boldogasszony-templom is a marvel. Its origins are likely Roman. Built in the 12th century its unique horseshoe-shaped apse is rare in Hungary. It’s found only in a few places in the Carpathian region. A fire possibly destroyed the original structure. For over a century it lay in ruins.

But hope arrived with the rebuilding efforts under the leadership of Payermann Janos. He spearheaded the church’s restoration. It was completed in 1732 in a Baroque style. The original entrance on the south side was walled up. A new one was opened on the west side. Sacristies were added altering the apse’s original shape. Later renovations in 1774 added a gallery and a round window above the west door. The church even temporarily housed a famous Mary icon.

A cemetery surrounded the church a common practice in medieval times. Even into the 18th century people buried their loved ones near the sacred walls. Today only archaeological evidence hints at its existence. The tombs of the Szunyogh and Terstyanszky families still stand before the altar. They represent the lasting connection between this village and its people.

The church still stands a quiet observer. It is a symbol of Gercse’s resilient spirit. Though the village is gone its legacy endures. In its simple beauty lies a compelling history. A testament to the ebb and flow of life the rise and fall of settlements. Gercse may be lost to history but its story is not forgotten. It is here for all to see and experience. A silent guardian against time.
