He served as a soldier during World War II. After the war he returned to Leipzig a city he would call “a city bitter to the Muses”. This is a poignant reflection on his creative struggles.

Despite the challenges Maurer thrived. He became a lecturer and later a professor at the Johannes R Becher Institute of Literature. He significantly influenced a generation of Saxon poets. His works included poetry essays and translations of Romanian literature. His most famous work the “Dreistrophenkalender” was illustrated by Werner Klemke.

Maurer’s legacy is far-reaching. He received numerous awards including the prestigious National Prize of the GDR. Even today he is remembered as the poet of Rosental. His lines “I sit in the universe on a bench in Rosental while the sun swims in thin cloud juice” capture the beauty and tranquility of this place.

He found love with the actress Eva Dehnert marrying her in 1946. They had three children Gabriele Thomas and Peter. Their family life likely contributed to his deep and meaningful writing.
