Why did the Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land get a new name? The Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land, formerly known as Naturpark Meißner-Kaufunger Wald, sprawls across 1156 square kilometers. It’s a breathtaking tapestry of diverse landscapes, woven together by the Werra River and the watchful eye of the mythical Frau Holle. The park’s name changed in 2017, reflecting not just a rebranding, but an expansion. The park grew from a modest 450 square kilometers in 1962, becoming a haven for biodiversity and a testament to the power of conservation. Imagine standing at the foot of the Hoher Meißner, the highest peak in the park. It’s said to be Frau Holle’s home, her legendary presence woven into the very fabric of this landscape. The park encompasses the Kaufunger Wald, Söhre, Hoher Meißner, Werra Valley, Hessische Schweiz, and the Ringgau. In 2017, areas around Sontra, Herleshausen, Nentershausen, Großalmerode, Hessisch Lichtenau, and Cornberg were added, creating a vast and interconnected natural wonderland. The Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land isn’t just a collection of pretty landscapes. It’s a geological marvel. Here, ancient basalt and sands from the Tertiary period collide with 240 million-year-old Muschelkalk deposits and Buntsandstein. You’ll also find Zechstein limestone and dolomite from a prehistoric sea. Remnants of a 360 million-year-old Grauwacke outcrop further enrich this geological tapestry. The park is a vital ecosystem, a designated hotspot for biodiversity. Rare plants and animals thrive here, drawn to the diverse habitats. From the dense forests to the Muschelkalkböden Karst areas, to the Werra Valley’s orchards and floodplains, life flourishes in every corner of the Geo-Naturpark. As you explore the park’s many trails, keep an eye out for the Frau Holle’s Blumenwiesen, or “Flower Meadows.” Created in 2019, these vibrant meadows offer a feast for insects and a burst of color for visitors. So next time you’re in the area, come and explore the Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land. It’s a place where myth and geology intertwine, where history and nature dance together, creating an experience you won’t soon forget.
