Do you know about the young general who defied the odds? He was Gregorio H. Del Pilar. He was a name etched in Philippine history.
Gregorio H. Del Pilar was not just a general. He was a symbol of youthful courage and unwavering patriotism. Born in Bulacan in 1875 he quickly rose through the ranks. People called him the Boy General because of his youth.
Del Pilar’s story is one of bravery and sacrifice. He was the nephew of Marcelo H. del Pilar. Marcelo was a propagandist. Gregorio studied at Ateneo Municipal de Manila. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at 20.
When the Philippine Revolution erupted, Gregorio joined Andres Bonifacio. He fought valiantly against Spanish garrisons in Bulacan. His military career began. He joined General Emilio Aguinaldo in Hong Kong. They planned the next steps.
During the Spanish-American War, Aguinaldo returned. He established the First Philippine Republic. Del Pilar became a section leader in Bulacan and Nueva Ecija. He landed in Bulacan with rifles from Hong Kong. He laid siege to the Spanish forces.
The Philippine-American War broke out. Del Pilar led his troops to victory. This was against Major Franklin Bell in the Battle of Quingua. His forces killed Colonel John M. Stotsenburg.
His most famous act was his last stand. It was at the Battle of Tirad Pass. On December 2 1899 Del Pilar led 60 soldiers. They faced the American 33rd Infantry Regiment. This regiment was led by Peyton C. March. They were known as the Texas Regiment.
The battle was a delaying action. It covered Aguinaldo’s retreat. Del Pilar died from a shot to the neck. American soldiers looted his body.
Lieutenant Dennis P. Quinlan gave Del Pilar a military burial. He inscribed on the tombstone: “An Officer and a Gentleman”. In 1930, his body was identified by his gold tooth.
Gregorio H. Del Pilar’s legacy lives on. Fort Del Pilar is named after him. It is home to the Philippine Military Academy in Baguio. The Tirad Pass Medal commemorated his sacrifice. In 1955, Concepcion in Ilocos Sur was renamed in his honor.
