Glimpse at the past. It shows Indonesia’s vision embodied in this majestic structure, the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium. This stadium stands as a testament to a nation’s dreams. It is a symbol of sporting excellence.

Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium is more than just a venue. It is a historical landmark. Its story is woven into the fabric of Jakarta. Named after Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, it reflects his ambition. He wanted to create a world-class sports complex.

The stadium’s construction began in 1960. It was completed in just two years. This rapid construction impressed many. The government secured a loan from the USSR to make it happen. Initially known as Gelora Senayan Main Stadium, its name changed in 1962. This honored President Soekarno.

Imagine the stadium in its early days. It had a capacity of 110000 spectators. The gigantic ring-shaped facade, or “temu gelang,” was Sukarno’s idea. It provided shade and added to the stadium’s grandeur. Soviet architects were hesitant. Sukarno insisted. His vision prevailed.

In 1969, during the New Order era, the complex was renamed Gelora Senayan Complex. The stadium became Gelora Senayan Main Stadium. This was part of a “de-Sukarnoization” policy.

The stadium has hosted many important events. The 1962 Asian Games marked its grand opening. The 2007 AFC Asian Cup final saw Iraq triumph over Saudi Arabia here at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium. Many AFF Cup finals have ignited passions within these walls.

Renovations in 2006 reduced the capacity to 88306. Further renovations for the 2018 Asian Games brought it down to 77193 single seats. These upgrades ensured compliance with FIFA standards. The new seats display the colors of the Indonesian flag. A brighter LED lighting system was installed. The stadium’s facade now boasts an RGB lighting system.

Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium continues to evolve. It attracts sports lovers and photographers alike. Its modern architecture and excellent facilities impress visitors. The stadium also serves as a public garden.

Considered one of Asia’s largest stadiums, Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium is not only a place for sports. It is a place where memories are created. It is a place where history unfolds. It is a symbol of Indonesia’s sporting spirit.
