“Philology, theology, and philosophy unite here.” That’s the motto that defines Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften. We stand before the Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften building. It is located at Kurt-Wolters-Str. 5 in Kassel.

The Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften building is home to the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Kassel. This faculty brings together traditional university disciplines. These include philology, theology, and philosophy. They all relate to language and text.

The Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften examines these subjects from a historical perspective. It asks how they shape society and exert power today. Many students from Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften become teachers. They then bring the power of texts to bear, shaping communities.

The Dean’s office is located within the Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften building. You can find it in Room 3002. The Dean is Prof. Dr. Petra Freudenberger-Lötz. The Vice Dean is Prof. Dr. Jan-Henrik Witthaus. Prof. Dr. Michael Mecklenburg serves as Dean of Studies. Dr. Hans Grote is the Faculty Manager.

The Faculty of Humanities offers various study programs. These programs cover a range of subjects. They emphasize practical experience. Internships, part-time jobs, and volunteer work are encouraged. The Faculty offers support for career orientation.

The Department of History is part of Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften. It provides an overview of European and non-European history. Students learn to analyze historical sources. They also develop methodological skills applicable to various fields. These fields include journalism, museums, and archives.

The History department is headed by Prof. Dr. Hubertus Büschel. His office is located at Nora Platiel-Str. 1. The History program offers a Bachelor of Arts degree. It takes six semesters to complete. Students can choose a minor subject to combine with history.

For international students, Marie-France Eisner is the contact person. You can find her in Room 3008. She can be reached by phone or email.

The German Language and Literature department is also part of Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften. It is located at Kurt-Wolters-Str. 5. The Institute für Germanistik is part of this department. The department has a large student body. It has 1,150 total students. 130 of them are master’s students.

The IT administrator, Oliver Schuster, has an office here. You can find him in Room 3059. He is available to assist with technical issues.

So, within these walls, the Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften cultivates critical thinking. It encourages exploration of the human condition. This is accomplished through language, history and culture. A true powerhouse of knowledge.
