Have you ever wondered how a vineyard can be a classroom? High above the Sachsenberg district of Ochsenbach, Geigersberg isn’t just a pretty view. It’s a living lesson in sustainable viticulture. Geigersberg was largely abandoned by the 1990s. But in 1996, a land consolidation project breathed new life into the area. Dry stone walls were painstakingly rebuilt. Nature conservation became a priority. The central question was how to balance ecology and economic viability. The answer unfolds along a two-kilometer circular path. Thirty information boards guide visitors through meadow orchards, wetlands, wine terraces, and woods. They explain how Geigersberg blends nature and species conservation with wine production. The project’s guided tours and wine tastings are incredibly popular. One highlight is the varietal garden. It showcases the transition to new grape varieties, like the Mediterranean Grenache, now thriving where Lemberger once grew. This shift may be influenced by Sachsenheim’s French partner community, Valréas, in the Rhône Valley. Geigersberg’s climate offers excellent protection for the vines. A local producer cultivates the grapes using traditional, natural methods. Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts is favored. The wines are given ample time to mature, eliminating the need for fining. This focus on terroir has produced award-winning wines. Geigersberg represents a return to a more diverse, small-scale approach to land management. The circular walk culminates at the “Wengertschützenhäusle” at the top of Geigersberg. From here, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Neckar region. It’s a perfect spot to reflect on how even small steps can make a difference in tackling climate change.
