Behold Gedung Rektorat. This imposing structure stands before you. Its presence commands attention. It’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to Indonesian higher education.

Gedung Rektorat University of Indonesia. Designed by Professor Gunawan. It was built between 1984 and 1987. Four main pillars support its roof. They are reminiscent of a traditional Javanese temple. Four smaller buildings surround the main structure. These are designed as exhibition halls or galleries.

Government regulations limited buildings to eight floors at the time. The main entrance is on the semi-basement and ground floor. Each floor is 4.2 meters high. That makes the total height an impressive 40 meters. The top floor is topped by a pointed roof. This symbolizes a centralized and elongated analysis. The centralized part reflects the design of famous Javanese kingdoms. The elongated portion represents the faculties. The central part is the administration center.

The building’s design is intriguing. Its construction is complex. The walls are not brick. They are primarily glass windows. These windows run horizontally across each floor. The glass maximizes natural light. This reduces the need for artificial lighting. It also ensures good air circulation. Using glass windows proved more economical than brick walls.

The interior space is divided into four sections. The lower two levels are united by a common roof. The upper floors each have separate roofs. These smaller roofs are pyramidal. They are similar to traditional Javanese joglo-style houses. However the peaks are flat. Another large central roof unifies the whole structure. This roof is also pyramidal. It’s pointed and forms a triangle on each side. Its height enhances the building’s majestic appearance. Below this central roof is a tall wall of glass. The University of Indonesia logo is prominently displayed. It’s large and white. The brown color of the roofs contrasts beautifully with the glass. It creates a warm feel. It also mitigates the starkness of the glass.

The building’s function is clear. The semi-basement level is a hall and corridor for students. The ground floor is the rector’s office. The second floor is for student administration. The top floor houses a mosque and elevators. Gedung Rektorat is more than a building. It is a symbol of the university’s ambition. It’s a space for learning and growth. It’s a part of Jakarta’s history and future.
