“A governor-general once lived here” is probably what you’re thinking as you gaze upon Gedung Arsip Nasional, Jakarta’s National Archives Building. This impressive structure whispers tales of colonial Indonesia. It is more than just a museum. It is a time capsule.

Gedung Arsip Nasional stands proudly on Jalan Gajah Mada. It is a stark contrast to the modern buildings surrounding it. This building was once the private residence of Reinier de Klerk. De Klerk was the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies.

Construction began in 1755 and was completed around 1760. De Klerk himself served as the architect. He later became governor-general of the VOC in 1777. Gedung Arsip Nasional represents the early Indies-Style house.

Imagine De Klerk, a powerful figure in the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie. He oversaw the construction of his grand residence. The house boasts four rooms open to visitors. A large front yard and a spacious backyard complete the property. The backyard even features a belfry and old gun barrels. The building extends 57 meters wide and stretches 164 meters long.

After De Klerk’s death in 1780, the house changed hands many times. During the 19th century, it served as an orphanage. Lack of funds led to neglect. The Batavia Society for Arts and Sciences and the Dutch East Indies government stepped in to buy the house. It briefly became the Department of Mining.

In 1925, the Dutch government undertook a major restoration. In 1992, it officially became the National Archives. Though the archives have since moved, the name Gedung Arsip Nasional remains.

Today, Gedung Arsip Nasional faces challenges. High maintenance costs and low visitor numbers threaten its preservation. Entry is free, relying on donors and sponsors. When one explores, they might find themselves alone. Only security guards are available to share the building’s history.

Inside, one can find relics of the Dutch era. Cabinets, chairs, desks, safes, and even a gramophone are on display. The collection is not vast. Empty spaces hint at what once was.

The building does offer air conditioning. Some exhibits feature labels in both Indonesian and English. However, improvements could enhance the visitor experience. More parking is needed. Accessibility for people with disabilities is limited. More exhibits would fill the empty spaces. A shop selling food, drinks, and souvenirs could attract more visitors.

Imagine the parties once hosted here. Reiner de Klerk was known to enjoy the company of friends and colleagues. The second floor with a long wooden dining table offered space for banquets. When Reiner and his guests were inside the main doors were closed. Servants had to use a side entrance to serve food.

Even a donation box near the entrance would help with upkeep. Despite these challenges, Gedung Arsip Nasional remains a significant landmark. It is a reminder of Jakarta’s rich and complex past. A visit here offers a glimpse into the life of a powerful governor-general and the legacy of Dutch colonialism. The ornaments above the doors show a religious man. A woman holding a cross symbolizes De Klerk’s faith. A woman holding an anchor is a welcome sign. A woman on a buffalo means the Dutch East India Company will not lack food. A man on a lion symbolizes that the Dutch East India Company will control the world. Take a moment to appreciate Gedung Arsip Nasional. It is a journey back in time.
