Ten thousand names. Each etched into a different colored brick. This is the Gedenkstätte für die Toten der Weltkriege in Bremen. This memorial stands as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of two world wars on this city.

The Gedenkstätte für die Toten der Weltkriege wasn’t always as it is today. It began in 1933. The Bremer Senat under the Nazis decided to build it. The architect Heinrich Friedrich Wiepking and sculptor Ernst Gorsemann created the design. The memorial was dedicated in 1935. General von Fritsch Bremen’s mayor and the Landesbischof Weidemann attended the ceremony.

The structure is a ring wall. The inside is lined with those 10000 bricks. Each brick bears a name a life lost. The names are arranged alphabetically. A long stone altar-like structure sits in the center. Outside the ring wall stands a sculpture. It depicts a mother protectively holding her children. Ernst Gorsemann created this sculpture too. It was added in 1936.

War damaged the Gedenkstätte für die Toten der Weltkriege. Restoration began in 1963. Sadly some of the damaged name stones were never replaced.

Above the original name stones is a poignant poem. It’s by Conrad Ferdinand Meyer. The poem speaks of the fallen. It speaks of the enduring impact of their sacrifices. An inscription on the outer ring wall commemorates those who died fighting for Bremen’s liberation in 1919. Sadly some bricks were removed after 1945. They bore the names of Nazis who died fighting for the Third Reich.

The altar’s inscription is equally moving. One side notes the 10000 men and boys lost from Bremen. The other recalls Jesus’ words about love and sacrifice. This memorial isn’t just stone and brick. It’s a testament to resilience. It’s a place to remember and reflect. A place to honor those lost in the tumultuous conflicts of the 20th century. The Gedenkstätte für die Toten der Weltkriege invites you to pause. It invites you to reflect on the cost of war. And to remember all those names on the bricks.
