Amidst the bustling railway history of Karlsruhe, stands the Gedenkstätte Bw Karlsruhe Rbf. This memorial, located on Langenbruchweg in Durlach, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime. The Gedenkstätte Bw Karlsruhe Rbf honors the fallen and missing members of the Karlsruhe marshalling yard depot, officially known as Bw Karlsruhe Rbf. This railway depot closed in 1960. The memorial specifically commemorates 22 railway employees who perished during an air raid on August 9, 1944. These individuals, whose lives were tragically cut short while performing their duties, are listed on a black metal plaque. The names include Wilhelm Bindner, Konrad Bock, Josef Bugger, Otto Frank, and Thomas Gensheimer. Also remembered are Friedrich Glinzig, August Greif, Erwin Herbold, Franz Hornung, and Mathilde Jooß. The list continues with Heinrich Kaiser, Josef King, Adolf Kohler, Karl Leibrecht, and August Meier. Finally, the memorial honors Paul Mühlebach, Anton Messistoff, Oskar Schäfer, Tobias Schick, Wilhelm Siebler, Emil Tropf, and August Walter. Above this somber roll call, a stylized Iron Cross, embraced by oak leaves, stands as a symbol of their sacrifice. Three days after the devastating air raid, on August 12, 1944, a memorial service was held at the main cemetery to honor the 22 victims. The Gedenkstätte Bw Karlsruhe Rbf stands not only as a testament to the individuals lost but also as a stark reminder of the impact of war on ordinary lives.
