A humble beginning whispers the very stones of GBI Sungai Yordan. This Jakarta church stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. Its story begins not in grandeur but in a small house on Jalan Tanjung Pura Gang Malaya. There in 1992 Pastor Markus Tonny Hidayat and a team of twelve from Jakarta started a small fellowship. Only two souls formed this initial congregation.

From those humble roots GBI Sungai Yordan blossomed. The church’s growth was remarkable. It quickly outgrew its first home. The congregation expanded from a handful of believers to thousands. This remarkable growth necessitated larger spaces for worship.

Initially under the GBI Sungai Yordan Jakarta’s wing the Pontianak congregation eventually became its own entity. In 2004 it joined a new synod in Jakarta. A new name was born: Gereja Sungai Yordan Pontianak. But the story doesn’t end there.

Pastor Hidayat received divine guidance. He integrated the powerful message of Psalm 21 into the church’s identity. This Psalm speaks of joy found through God’s power. This became the core of their message. The name GSY Jemaat Mazmur 21 Pontianak reflects this spiritual shift.

The need for more space remained a constant challenge. Services were temporarily held at various locations including an auditorium in Mal Gajah Mada. The expansion continued unabated. A new building became essential.

The dream of a larger church became a reality. In 2005 the cornerstone was laid for the Graha Mazmur 21 building. This impressive structure was constructed on land formerly a reservoir. It opened in 2007 and was officially inaugurated by the Governor of West Kalimantan in 2008.

Today GBI Sungai Yordan stands tall. Its journey from a small house fellowship to a large church showcases the power of faith and community. It is a place where the message of Psalm 21 rings true. The church continues to serve and grow under the guidance of God’s grace. Its history is a testament to the unwavering belief of those who built it. The building itself a symbol of their dedication. This is GBI Sungai Yordan a vibrant heart of faith in Jakarta.
