The echoes of fervent prayers still resonate. This is GBI Petamburan a place steeped in faith and history.

GBI Petamburan is more than just a church. It’s a cornerstone of Pentecostal Christianity in Indonesia. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. Its story is woven into the very fabric of Jakarta.

From humble beginnings GBI Petamburan’s roots trace back to the arrival of American missionaries in 1921. They brought Pentecostal doctrines to Indonesia. These seeds of faith blossomed. Later a group split from the Pentecostal Church of Indonesia founding Bethel Full Gospel Church. In 1967 this church unified with the Church of God in Cleveland Tennessee. Internal disagreements led to re-registration in 1970. The church was then re-named Gereja Bethel Indonesia or GBI. The Ministry of Religious Affairs officially registered GBI under writ No 41 on December 9 1972.

Pastor HL Senduk played a pivotal role. He and his colleagues established GBI. He served GBI Petamburan alongside his wife Pastor Helen Theska Senduk. Pastor Thio Tjong Koan and Pastor Harun Sutanto also contributed significantly. Pastor Senduk’s vision was ambitious. He envisioned 10000 GBI churches. This vision continues to inspire.

GBI Petamburan experienced phenomenal growth. By 1998 it boasted 725000 believers across 1320 churches. This number swelled to 2.5 million by 2010. The church even inaugurated a massive 10000 seat temple in Jakarta in 2003. In 2012 GBI had an estimated 5000 churches 3 million members and 100000 members abroad.

GBI Petamburan’s theological foundation rests on Pentecostalism. Its Confession of Faith emphasizes the inspiration of the Bible the Trinity and the two natures of Christ. Baptism communion baptism in the Holy Spirit and divine healing are central practices. Bethel Seminary in Jakarta along with other institutions provides theological training for ministers.

Today GBI Petamburan continues to thrive. It remains a vibrant center for spiritual growth and community engagement. It’s a place where faith echoes through generations a testament to its enduring legacy in Jakarta’s rich tapestry. Its history is a powerful reminder of faith’s resilience and its ability to shape communities.
