Across the ages, nestled in Bolayır, stands the Gazi Süleyman Paşa Camii. This mosque whispers tales of Orhan Gazi’s son, the conqueror of Rumelia, Gazi Süleyman Paşa. Gazi Süleyman Paşa, whose life ended around 1357, commissioned this mosque. Originally, the complex housed a mosque, a zawiya, an imaret, a caravanserai, and a türbe. Sadly, only the mosque and the türbe have survived the passage of time. The Gazi Süleyman Paşa Camii’s walls are built of brick and rubble stone. Look closely at the masonry. You’ll see roughly hewn ashlar blocks and alternating rows of brick. The interior prayer hall, measuring 9.05 by 10.75 meters, features two rows of windows. Each wall has four rectangular windows framed by ashlar stone sills. These windows are adorned with brick pointed relieving arches. The main entrance, located on the north side, has a pointed arch nestled within a niche. The minaret, a stocky structure with a square base and cylindrical body, rises from the northwest corner of the prayer hall. The mihrap, supported by a buttress, retains only its muqarnas niche. The minbar, with its rows of pointed arches, showcases geometric carvings. The word of God, inscribed within a cartouche, is framed by a palmette. Above it, the palmette is filled with rumi carvings. The square türbe, measuring 7.80 by 7.87 meters, underwent restoration during the Republican era. The walls are now covered with painted plaster, imitating alternating rows of brick and ashlar. Its roof, an octagonal pyramid inside and a dome outside, presents an unusual design in Ottoman architecture. It reflects influences from Seljuk tomb design. Inside rests Süleyman Paşa’s tomb, surrounded by an ornate cast-iron railing in the Empire style from the late 19th century. Legend claims that his horse, who died alongside him, is buried at his feet. Nearby, you’ll find the tomb of Namık Kemal, a prominent figure in the Turkish National Architecture movement. Gazi Süleyman Paşa Camii stands as a testament to a rich history. It is a blend of architectural styles. It’s a place where stories intertwine and where the past comes alive.
