September 1998 marked the birth of Gateway High School. Here at 1430 Scott Street, Gateway High School stands as a testament to the belief that all students, regardless of background or learning style, can achieve academic excellence. Gateway High School operates as a charter school, sharing its building with KIPP SF Bay Academy. This building once housed Benjamin Franklin Middle School, adding another layer of history to this location. Gateway High School is known for its small class sizes and its dedicated faculty. The school’s motto, “Step Up, Do Right, Dream Big,” reflects its commitment to fostering personal integrity, responsibility, and respect. In 2006, the United States Department of Education recognized Gateway High School as one of eight acclaimed charter schools in the nation. Newsweek further cemented its reputation in 2009, ranking it among “America’s Top Public High Schools.” Gateway High School boasts an impressive college preparatory, liberal arts curriculum. Freshmen embark on an introductory seminar course, and all students are required to take two years of art. This is double the state requirement. While physical education isn’t mandatory, classes are available for those interested. The school’s commitment to academic excellence is evident in its standing as the third highest-ranked public school in San Francisco for English standardized testing scores as of September 2017.
