This magnificent baroque structure, dreamt up by Augustus the Strong, was meant to transform Dresden into a cultural beacon. Augustus, inspired by the splendor of Versailles, envisioned a palace to house his vast art collection. Construction began in 1709, with Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann as the architect. The Crown Gate, a jewel within the Zwinger, stands as a symbol of royal power. Imagine the elaborate festivities that unfolded within these walls. The Zwinger’s inauguration in 1719, celebrating the marriage of Prince Frederick Augustus, must have been a sight to behold.
