Fancy a tale as winding as a snail’s trail? We are standing before Gasthof zur Schnecke. This historic building has stood here in Passau’s Innstadt since the early 19th century. Its address is Kapuzinerstraße 12 right at the intersection of Kapuzinerstraße and Mühltalstraße.
Gasthof zur Schnecke is a listed building with a fascinating past. The two-story building has a shallow pitched roof. It has housed a restaurant since its early days.
Back in 1846 the Passau address book already listed a beer host at the Schnecken property. The owner was Leopold Stockinger. He ran the place until at least 1872. Imagine the clinking of beer steins and the hearty laughter echoing through the years.
The building has seen changes over time. In 1949 the roof structure was renewed. Then in 1954 toilets were installed. Two small windows were placed close together on the north facade.
The entrance to Gasthof zur Schnecke was once on the south side. Today it is on the west side. A complete exterior renovation took place in 1999. The Gasthof zur Schnecke shines again.
In 2012 the Wachauer Stube moved into this building from across the street. For a while the Gasthof zur Schnecke operated as “Wachauer Stube”. Later it returned to its original name “Zur Schnecke”.
Gasthof zur Schnecke has witnessed Passau’s history unfold. It even stood firm during the flood of 2013. It is more than just a building. It is a landmark with stories etched into its walls.
