But his progressive ideas, his fight against the Inquisition and his criticism of the Church’s power made him enemies in high places. In 1801, he was unjustly imprisoned, first in the peaceful confines of Valldemossa Monastery. There, amidst the quiet solitude, he began his “Memoria sobre educación pública,” a testament to his unwavering belief in the power of knowledge. But even in exile, his voice could not be silenced. His words continued to challenge the status quo. This led to his transfer to the imposing Castillo de Bellver. Within these very walls, Jovellanos endured nearly six years of confinement, deprived of his most cherished companions: pen and paper. Yet, his spirit remained unbroken. When he was finally allowed to write again, he poured his observations onto the page, capturing the essence of Bellver in his “Memorias del castillo de Bellver.” He also documented other Palma landmarks like the Lonja, the Cathedral, and the monasteries of San Francisco and Santo Domingo. Jovellanos’ time in Mallorca, though forced upon him, became a period of intellectual ferment for the island. His insatiable curiosity ignited a spark in local scholars.
