Gazing upon Gasholder Park, can you imagine this tranquil space once held a giant gas storage container? Gasholder Park in King’s Cross isn’t your typical London park. It’s a unique blend of industrial heritage and modern design. This unusual park sits within the circular frame of Gasholder No. 8, a structure that once stored town gas for the Pancras Gasworks. The gas was produced using coal from the Imperial Gas, Light and Coke Company. This impressive Grade II listed structure, built in the 1850s, consists of 16 hollow cast-iron columns. These support a 25-meter-high circular guide frame that spans over 35 meters across. Imagine the sheer scale of this structure when it was fully operational! The gasworks were decommissioned in 2000, marking the end of an era. Over a decade later, in 2011, the gasholder frame was carefully dismantled. It was then transported to Yorkshire for refurbishment by a specialized engineering firm. Its journey back to King’s Cross began in 2013. It was reassembled in its current location north of Regent’s Canal, near Camley Street Natural Park and St. Pancras Basin. Today, Gasholder Park provides a peaceful escape. It offers a tranquil green space and serves as a venue for events within this bustling urban environment. The Royal Institute of British Architects praised Gasholder Park for its simplicity, highlighting how it draws people to the area. It provides a much-needed tranquil setting in a densely populated urban environment. The judges awarded Bell Philips Architects for their innovative design. They described it as “simplicity at its best, drawing people to the area and offering a relaxing, tranquil setting in a high-density urban environment”. The park is a testament to the successful integration of historical preservation and modern urban design. Gasholder Park stands as a unique landmark within King’s Cross. It offers a fascinating glimpse into London’s industrial past.
