In 1838, a beacon of innovation ignited in Leipzig. Gasbehälter Gaswerk I, Leipzig’s first gasworks, began operations. It illuminated the city, marking a pivotal moment in its history. This pioneering facility, initially situated near the Gerbertor, was more than just bricks and mortar. It was a symbol of progress, a testament to the city’s forward-thinking spirit. Gasbehälter Gaswerk I began by powering 877 public gas lamps. It also served 1,100 private customers. These included prominent establishments like Messehäuser, hotels, and bustling Gaststuben. The demand for gas grew rapidly. The Gasbehälter Gaswerk I underwent expansions in 1860 to meet the increasing needs of the burgeoning city. Its initial purpose was to provide gas for streetlights, illuminating Leipzig’s public spaces and enhancing safety. Later, its reach extended to private homes. Citizens embraced the new technology, using gas for lighting and cooking. R.-S. Blochmann, a renowned gas expert, oversaw the design and construction of Gasbehälter Gaswerk I. His expertise ensured the gasworks’ efficient operation and set a standard for similar facilities across Germany. Over the years, Gasbehälter Gaswerk I evolved. New gas holders, storage buildings, and retort houses were added. A dedicated rail connection facilitated the transportation of coke, a byproduct of gas production. The gasworks expanded significantly between 1888 and 1890. This transformation, led by J.-R. Westeholz, resulted in the “New Gasworks I”. It featured state-of-the-art technology and solidified Leipzig’s position as a leader in gas production. The Gasbehälter Gaswerk I became a prototype for gasworks across Germany. Its design was replicated in approximately 600 locations, showcasing the effectiveness of its technology. In 1929, with the construction of a larger gasworks in Connewitz, Gasbehälter Gaswerk I was decommissioned. While some buildings were repurposed, many gas-specific structures were demolished or integrated into the new gas supply system. The site of the former Gasbehälter Gaswerk I is now home to facilities belonging to the Stadtwerke Leipzig and Leipziger Wasserwerke, signifying the continued importance of the location for the city’s utilities.
