Did you know that Gary Indiana was once called the City of the Century? That’s right this bustling city on the shores of Lake Michigan holds a fascinating history. Gary wasn’t always the city you see today. It was founded in 1906 by the United States Steel Corporation. They built it as a company town to support their massive Gary Works steel mill. This mill was and still is the largest steel mill complex in North America. Imagine the sheer scale of this undertaking. The company even built the houses the schools the infrastructure everything.

For a time Gary thrived. The steel industry brought prosperity and a diverse population. People from all over the world came seeking work. Broadway the city’s main street was a vibrant commercial center. Department stores grand movie theaters and even architecturally significant buildings lined the streets. This rapid growth continued for decades. Gary quickly became one of Indiana’s largest cities. It grew to a population of over 178000 people at its peak. The city’s population was diverse too. In 1920 nearly 30 percent of Gary’s residents were foreign-born.

This led to massive layoffs at U S Steel Gary Works. The city’s population plummeted. By the 2020 census its population was down to about 69000 a loss of over 60 percent since 1960.

Despite these challenges Gary holds a rich cultural heritage. The city was home to the Jackson 5 the iconic musical family whose members include Michael Jackson. This is a point of pride for the city. Gary also played a significant role in the civil rights movement. In 1968 it elected Richard Hatcher as the first African American mayor of a major US city. Today Gary is working to revitalize itself. There are ongoing efforts to improve the city’s infrastructure attract new businesses and preserve its historic neighborhoods.
