Have you ever sailed down the Thames and spotted a small island, almost hidden amongst the willows? It’s Garrick’s Ait, a tiny jewel nestled in the river, and a unique slice of London history.

This isn’t just any island. It’s the only island in the UK named after an actor – the legendary David Garrick. This 18th-century superstar built a grand villa and a whimsical Temple of Shakespeare on the nearby Hampton bank. It all started when he bought three islands in the area, and Garrick’s Ait, formerly known as Shank’s Eyot, became his own little paradise.

Imagine a time when, instead of houses, the island was a riot of willow trees. They weren’t just for show. The islanders meticulously pollarded the willows, using the wood for cricket bats, paddles, ladders, and even crates. The strong, flexible branches, called osiers, were used for basket making and reinforcing riverbanks.

Today, 20 houses dot the island, a testament to its transformation. The houses are only accessible by boat, making it a charming and secluded retreat. And while it has come a long way from its willow-growing days, a visit to Garrick’s Ait offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Thames, and the life of a man whose legacy still echoes through the centuries.
