Originally, the Garrand Building was the main building for Seattle College. Seattle College was the predecessor to Seattle University. Imagine the early students. They walked these halls with dreams and ambitions.
In 1935, an important development occurred. The Department of Nursing was introduced at Seattle College. This was a pivotal moment. The Garrand Building became associated with nursing education. The first nursing graduates completed their program in 1939.
Seattle College evolved over the years. In 1948, it officially became Seattle University. The Garrand Building continued to play a vital role. It adapted to the changing needs of the university.
The College of Nursing grew significantly. In 1941, the Department of Nursing was given the status of School. In February 1953, the National League for Nursing approved the collegiate program. Seattle University was the second university in Washington to receive this honor.
The Garrand Building became the heart of the nursing program. The College of Nursing resides in this historic building today. The building is located between the Administration and Casey buildings.
In the 1950s, Seattle University made an innovative change. It eliminated night and weekend clinical experiences for nursing students. This was a first in the nation.
A rededication ceremony was held on December 8, 1994. Archbishop Thomas Murphy officiated a morning mass. This event celebrated the Garrand Building’s enduring legacy.
The Garrand Building houses important offices. You’ll find the Dean’s office here. Faculty offices and conference rooms are also within these walls.
In Fall 2003, the School of Nursing became the College of Nursing. This change reflected the growth of its programs. The Garrand Building continued to be its home.
The Clinical Performance Laboratory opened in 2005. It is located in the James Tower Life Sciences Building. This state-of-the-art facility provides nursing students with realistic training.
In July 2017, the Diagnostic Ultrasound program joined the College of Nursing. This further expanded the college’s offerings. The Garrand Building remains a central point for students and faculty.
