“Ever wondered how Paris manages its massive flow of goods?” Garonor. That’s the key. This isn’t your typical Parisian landmark. Garonor is a sprawling industrial park. It lies between Aulnay-sous-Bois and Le Blanc-Mesnil. Think 75 hectares of bustling activity. More than 350000 square meters of buildings house hundreds of businesses. It’s a vital economic hub.

Garonor’s story begins in the 1960s. Paris faced a huge traffic problem. The solution? Keep large vehicles out of the city center. The ambitious plan was to create a transit center outside the city. The Bremond-Lafond group owned land in Aulnay-sous-Bois and Le Blanc-Mesnil. Initially slated for housing. This changed when highway routes were finalized. The land became ideally positioned at the intersection of the A1 and A3 highways.

In 1963 the Société d’études de la gare routière nord (Garonor) was formed. This would eventually become a private company. The initial focus was freight. It gradually shifted to logistics due to its perfect location. Garonor became a leading inland customs center. This success led to significant expansion.

Initially Garonor ran its own transfer services. Big trucks would drop off goods. Smaller vehicles would then distribute items within Paris. However this proved inefficient. Many transporters chose not to participate fully. Garonor’s focus switched. It became a major provider of warehousing. They also leased office space and other facilities.

Garonor aimed to be more than just an industrial zone. They provided excellent support services. This included administrative and social facilities. The goal was flexibility in leasing space. Their success attracted developers from France and abroad. Construction continued until the 1980s.

A railway line initially serviced Garonor. It transported goods for companies. However this was replaced by road transport. The railway line is now abandoned. Today Garonor has over 200 businesses. They employ over 2500 people. Garonor stands as a testament to clever urban planning. It successfully solved a major traffic issue and created a crucial economic engine. So next time you enjoy a Parisian baguette remember its journey may well have begun at Garonor.
