Recall the year 1887. Garfield in Victoria, Australia was officially named. Before that, it was known as Cannibal Creek. This name came either from the Aboriginal word for blackfellow or from dingoes killing dogs.

Garfield is about 79 km south-east of Melbourne. It sits within the Shire of Cardinia. The town’s history is tied to the timber industry. In 1877, Cannibal Creek Siding was built when the railway line arrived. This boosted the timber trade.

Why Garfield? The town was renamed to honor James A. Garfield. He was a U.S. President. He was assassinated in 1881. The local community had other names in mind but Garfield stuck.

Garfield has grown over the years. The population in 2021 was 2114. It had 700 residents at one point. The town offers essential services and local charm.

Garfield Picture Theatre is special. Built in 1924, it was the town’s first electricity source. It is one of the few remaining picture theatres in the shire. Today, it hosts monthly concerts.

The town has a primary school. It has about 150 students. A church stands near the school grounds. Garfield also offers a range of businesses. You can find a newsagency and a sourdough bakery. There is also a clothing shop and cafes.

Garfield is more than just a name. It is a community with a history. It has local events and a welcoming spirit. The Garfield Christmas Festival and the West Gippsland Railtowns Food and Wine Festival attract many visitors.

Garfield is a place where history and community meet. From its start as Cannibal Creek to its present-day festivals. Garfield offers something unique. As you explore, remember its past.
