The school’s current building is a four-story stepped structure. Its design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Inside red colors dominate. They symbolize success and happiness for the students in the Cantonese Dual Language Immersion program. The interior and exterior were renovated in 2020. The renovation included creating outdoor learning spaces. This was part of the Green School Yard program. It integrates the landscape into the learning experience.
More than just classrooms Garfield Elementary offers a comprehensive education. It includes a Cantonese Immersion Program for kindergarten through fifth grade. There’s a Special Day Class for children with mild to moderate autism. An after-school program runs until 5:45 PM each school day. The school boasts a newly renovated library. It houses a large selection of culturally relevant books. Ms Tang the school librarian helps with reading lessons and maker lab activities.
Field trips are a big part of the Garfield experience. Students regularly visit iconic San Francisco locations. Chinatown the Embarcadero and the Asian Art Museum are favorites. Being located near Coit Tower offers a unique advantage. The entire school goes to the Tower to view the murals and admire the school from above.
