Hidden within Budapest’s vibrant tapestry lies Ganzkertváros, a neighborhood woven from the dreams of factory workers. In the 1920s, the Ganz factory workers sought a place to call their own. They initiated a housing movement, a quest for affordable plots of land. This dream took root, blossoming into the Ganzkertváros we stand before today. Ganzkertváros wasn’t always part of Budapest. Until 1945, it belonged to Vecsés. It was then annexed to Pestszentlőrinc before finally becoming part of Budapest in 1950. Picture the families settling in, their lives intertwined with the rhythm of the Ganz factory. Ganzkertváros, nestled within Budapest’s 18th district, is bordered by Üllői út, Béke tér, the city limits, Kerékkötő utca, Ganz Ábrahám utca, Alacskai út, Királyhágó utca, and back to Béke tér. This neighborhood, born from the ambition of workers, offers a glimpse into a unique chapter of Budapest’s story. It’s a testament to the power of community and the enduring legacy of industry.
