Consider Ganløse Kirke not just a building, but a silent witness. It has observed centuries of Danish history unfold. Built around 1100, Ganløse Kirke began as a humble Romanesque structure.

Today, only a fragment of the original granite wall remains visible. Find it on the north side of the chancel. Over time, the church evolved. A Gothic tower appeared in the 1400s. Then a staircase was added in 1583. The large side-aisle was completed between 1632 and 1634. These additions mask the original Romanesque architecture. The exterior reflects 19th-century restorations.

Look for Copenhagen University’s coat of arms on the side-aisle. The church was under the university’s control after the Reformation in 1536. This arrangement lasted until 1934.

Inside Ganløse Kirke the original Romanesque triumphal arch remains. It leads into the chancel. Gothic vaults grace the nave and chancel. These were added later.

The altarpiece dominates the chancel. It dates back to about 1600. It reflects the High Renaissance style. Jørgen Roed painted the central panel in 1865. It depicts Christ’s meeting with disciples on the road to Emmaus.

Marvel at the pulpit. It came from Hans Holst’s workshop in 1624. Four friezes depict significant events. These show Jesus’ birth, crucifixion, resurrection, and Judgment Day.

Consider the baptismal font. It is made of granite. This is the only feature from the church’s original construction. Lorenz Frølich designed the copper baptismal dish in 1857.

Note the church organ. T. W. Krohn built it in 1980. It has 14 stops. Ganløse Kirke is part of the Slagslunde-Ganløse pastorate. Both churches share pastors. Malene Graeser-Greve has served since 2014. Christian Gottlieb joined in 2021. Ganløse Kirke stands as a testament to time. It reflects changing architectural styles. It embodies centuries of faith in Ganløse.
