The community decided a new church was needed. This new Gammel Åby Kirke rose in its place in 1873. Designed by royal building inspector V.Th. Walther, it embraces a Romanesque style with a touch of Italian influence. Look closely at the brickwork. Bands of yellow and red create a striking visual pattern. The structure, with its apse, choir, nave, and tower, embodies the classic Danish village church aesthetic. Inside Gammel Åby Kirke, simplicity reigns. A painted wooden ceiling and minimal ornamentation create a serene atmosphere. Yet, treasures from the past remain. The original granite baptismal font, a tangible link to the earlier church, still graces this space. A copy of the golden crucifix, the original of which resided in the first church and now held by the National Museum, hangs here.
