Gambling thrived in San Francisco during the Gold Rush. Gambier Plaza in San Francisco was a hub of this activity. Imagine the scene in 1851. Men clutching gold dust crowded around tables. The air hung thick with tobacco smoke and brandy fumes. The clatter of coins was a constant soundtrack to their fortunes won and lost.

Gambier Plaza wasn’t just any plaza. Its location near Portsmouth Square made it a key part of San Francisco’s early development. It was the center of much of the city’s commercial and social life. Its history is tightly woven into the fabric of the Gold Rush era.

The 1852 U S Coast Survey map shows the astonishing growth of San Francisco. Development was concentrated around Yerba Buena Cove. Market Street reached out past Fremont Street into the bay. Wharves stretched out to meet ships from around the world. Gambier Plaza stood at the heart of this bustling port.

The area around Gambier Plaza was far from empty marshland. High and dry land existed. Steamboat Point for example was used for shipbuilding. H B Tichenor built his marine railway there. This spot was crucial for the city’s development. It later became incredibly valuable land.

Enormous rents were common in the Gold Rush. The Parker House for example rented for $110000 yearly. A canvas tent near Gambier Plaza called Eldorado was rented by gamblers for $40000. Such high rents reflect the intense speculation and wealth of the time. Gambier Plaza was a prime location within this frenzied marketplace.

The infamous Dr Peter Smith is another part of Gambier Plaza’s story. He was a contractor who cared for San Francisco’s indigent sick. He was paid in city scrip. He eventually forced the city to sell real estate including water lots to pay him. Many of these lots ended up around Gambier Plaza’s area. The sales created years of legal disputes over land titles.

Gambier Plaza stands as a silent witness. It has witnessed fortunes made and lost. It saw the feverish growth of the city. The plaza remains a quiet spot in the midst of San Francisco’s ever-changing landscape. Its past however is always present. It whispers tales of wealth and speculation. The echoes of the Gold Rush still linger in the air around Gambier Plaza.
