Is this a mirage? Here in front of us stands the majestic Galmaduwa Raja Maha Viharaya. It seems to shimmer in the heat. This ancient Buddhist temple has seen centuries come and go. Let’s step closer and delve into its story. The Galmaduwa Raja Maha Viharaya, also known as Gedige Viharaya or Gal Viharaya, is a testament to Sri Lanka’s rich Buddhist heritage. It is a fascinating blend of architectural styles. What’s particularly intriguing is the temple’s image house. Unlike traditional wooden structures, this one is built of stone, showcasing a unique blend of Hindu architectural elements inspired by the Tanjore tradition. The square-shaped image house has a sturdy base of stone. The upper levels, however, are crafted from both brick and stone masonry. Notice how they rise in seven diminishing steps. This design element symbolizes a Vimana, a celestial chariot. Inside, a serene atmosphere envelops you. A large seated Buddha statue resides in the shrine room. The walls and the masonry-work roof come alive with vibrant Kandyan Era paintings, whispering tales of a bygone era. What we see today at Galmaduwa Raja Maha Viharaya is the result of restoration efforts. Originally, it is believed to have been built under the patronage of King Kirti Sri Rajasingha’s queen. She entrusted the task to her chief minister, Meegastenne Maha Adikaram. It is believed that the temple was constructed sometime between 1747 and 1782, during his reign. However, the story takes a curious turn. Bricks found at the site bear masonry marks in Brahmi letters from the Anuradhapura Period. This suggests the presence of an even older structure! The Galmaduwa Raja Maha Viharaya stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Its unique architecture and serene ambiance make it an unforgettable gem in Kandy’s crown.
