Here at Galerie Regard Sud, art transcends mere aesthetics. It builds bridges. Established in 1998, Galerie Regard Sud champions cultural exchange. It fosters connections between the Maghreb, the Middle East, and Europe. This happens through visual arts and cinema. The gallery opened its doors in 2000. It resides in Lyon’s historic Croix Rousse district.
Within its three rooms, Galerie Regard Sud develops two main focuses. Firstly, it explores various contemporary art forms. These include photography, paintings, video, and installations. Secondly, it hosts events. The gallery showcases artists from around the Mediterranean. It also includes artists from other regions. Galerie Regard Sud actively participates in Lyon’s Biennale d’Art Contemporain. It also takes part in Septembre de la Photographie.
Since 1999, Regard Sud has organized an annual event. It’s called Fenêtres sur le cinéma du Sud. This happens in partnership with the Institut Lumière in Lyon. This festival presents Lyonnais audiences with quality programming. It highlights the diversity of film production in the Maghreb and the Middle East.
Galerie Regard Sud contributes to building and defending the culture. It supports artists from the African continent and the Arab world. It also supports artists from the North, fostering cross-cultural perspectives. The gallery cultivates numerous partnerships. It collaborates with local and national cultural organizations. Past exhibitions at Galerie Regard Sud include Sandra Städeli’s Natura Profunda. This showcased trees captured in winter light. There was also Rima Samman’s L’amour se porte autour du cou. This poignant photography series intertwined family memories. Nicola Vigilanti’s Grainy America documented the vestiges of the American Dream. Mabeye Deme’s Golf Sud questioned the temporal context of images. Kacem Noua’s Travaux d’intérêt général explored the states of pictorial matter. Johann Rivat’s Blowing in the Wind echoed Bob Dylan’s song. Celine_A’s Qui me vend une fleur aujourd’hui? drew inspiration from Antonia Pozzi.
