“Cu,” it’s an unusual name, isn’t it? Galerie Kunstraum is more than just a gallery. It’s a testament to the power of art to revitalize a community. Founded by Janika Kungl and Carla Bock, Galerie Kunstraum brings a breath of fresh air to Karlsruhe. These two met while working at a bar after studying at the Karlsruhe Art Academy. They noticed a lack of artistic vibrancy in the Beiertheim district. So they decided to do something about it.
Galerie Kunstraum, or “Cu,” is a non-profit exhibition space. The name “Cu” is a clever play on words. It references the chemical symbol for copper and the English phrase “see you.” This is because a coppersmith used to occupy these very rooms. Carla Bock, who also works as a bartender, explained the name’s origin.
Step inside Galerie Kunstraum. You will find three distinct spaces. The room facing the street is the primary exhibition area. Carla uses another room as her atelier. The third room will be rented out in the future.
Galerie Kunstraum hosts monthly exhibitions. These exhibitions foster cultural exchange. The gallery recently showcased “Touch.” It is a Romanian-German exhibition. It was previously displayed in Karlsruhe’s twin city, Temeswar. “Touch” featured works by Georgiana and Călin Beloescu from Temeswar. Gabi Kaiser, a photographer from Heidelberg, also contributed. Walter Roth, an actor and publisher, read from his book “Von der Leichtigkeit des Seins” at the opening. Janika also runs the vintage shop “Schon wieder Studio” on Werderplatz. She emphasizes the importance of cultural exchange within the gallery.
Galerie Kunstraum operates on a non-profit basis. Therefore, the gallery does not sell the exhibited works. Instead, visitors purchase directly from the artists. Drinks are available during opening hours in exchange for donations. The opening hours vary depending on the exhibition. For the upcoming show, Galerie Kunstraum will be open Friday through Sunday from 3 pm to 6 pm.
Galerie Kunstraum is more than just an art space. It’s a community hub. It supports local artists. It also brings people together through a shared love of art. This little gallery makes a big impact. It enriches the cultural landscape of Karlsruhe. Next time you’re in town, be sure to “Cu” at Galerie Kunstraum. You might discover your new favorite artist.
