Hidden in the heart of Loschwitz, Galerie am Blauen Wunder whispers stories of modern art and a passionate gallerist. Galerie am Blauen Wunder wasn’t just a building. It was the embodiment of Gunter Ziller’s vision. Established in 1991 with Ulrike Dagen, the Galerie am Blauen Wunder quickly became a haven for modern art. Ziller, a Dresden native with a background in physics, poured his love for art into this space. He curated 143 exhibitions, primarily showcasing living modern artists. He championed those who dared to challenge conventions, like Hans Christoph, whose 90th birthday exhibition marked the gallery’s debut. Christoph, once labeled a “formalist” and ostracized, found his redemption within Galerie am Blauen Wunder’s walls. Ziller’s profound knowledge of art resonated in his opening speeches. He shared insightful anecdotes about each artist, fostering a deeper appreciation for their work. The gallery became known for its personal touch. Ziller would present each artist with a Bird of Paradise flower at the exhibition’s close, a tradition as vibrant as the art itself. The gallery showcased renowned figures like Hermann Glöckner, Josef Hegenbarth, and HAP Grieshaber, alongside artists who had fled Dresden during the GDR era, only to return later and share their experiences through their art. After Dagen’s departure in 1998, the gallery continued to thrive, shifting its focus towards emerging artists. Ziller’s dedication to art extended beyond Galerie am Blauen Wunder. He curated a major exhibition on Fritz Löffler, a significant figure in Dresden’s art and preservation scene, further solidifying his reputation in the art world. Sadly, Ziller’s health declined after 2016, leading to the gallery’s closure. His legacy, however, continues to resonate. He wasn’t just presenting art; he was sharing his passion, a “Sisyphos” as described by a local newspaper, whose work was anything but futile. Galerie am Blauen Wunder remains a testament to his unwavering dedication and a reminder of the power of art to connect, inspire, and endure.
