Opened in 1969 the G02A Hamzah Sendut Library 1 stands proudly. It began as the University of Penang Library. It was housed in the Malayan Teachers College in Gelugor Penang. In 1971 the G02A Hamzah Sendut Library 1 moved to temporary Minden buildings. A new building finally opened in 1979. The library expanded. G02A Hamzah Sendut Library 1 wasn’t always so grand.
The G02A Hamzah Sendut Library 1 is part of a larger complex. There is also Perpustakaan Hamzah Sendut 2. This reflects the library’s growth and increasing importance to the Universiti Sains Malaysia. The main campus library was renamed in honor of Tan Sri Hamzah Sendut. He was the first Vice Chancellor. This happened on December 10 2004. The naming reflects his contributions to the university and its library system.
