“Lost in a book?” a voice startled me. I blinked, lowering my copy of “Hikayat Hang Tuah” outside the G02 Hamzah Sendut Library 1. This wasn’t just any library. It was one of the main libraries of Universiti Sains Malaysia, right here on Penang Island. The G02 Hamzah Sendut Library 1, formerly just a part of the main campus library, now stands as its own entity. This building, along with Perpustakaan Hamzah Sendut 2 (PHS2) and the original Perpustakaan Hamzah Sendut (PHS), make up the library system named after the university’s first Vice-Chancellor, Tan Sri Hamzah Sendut. That dedication happened on December 10, 2004, a date etched in the university’s history. The original library, known then as the Library of the University of Penang, began humbly in 1969 at the Malayan Teachers College in Gelugor. By 1971 it had moved to Minden, housed in temporary buildings. The library finally found its permanent home in a new building in 1979. The need for expansion led to the completion of what is now the PHS2 in 1994. And here we stand, before the G02 Hamzah Sendut Library 1, a testament to the university’s growth and commitment to knowledge. Inside these walls, countless stories wait to be discovered. Just don’t get too lost in them like I almost did.
