Step into the buzzing, vibrant ArtPlay backyard, and you will find the Futurescape Sculpture. This vibrant mosaic artwork captures the imagination of children and adults alike, serving as a playful tribute to the city of Melbourne’s future. The project was commissioned in 2012 by the City of Melbourne for ArtPlay, the city’s children’s creative arts centre. The Futurescape Sculpture is a testament to the unique partnership between children and renowned mosaic artist Helen Bodycomb.
During the project, Helen Bodycomb hosted a series of workshops with children aged 5-12 years. The children explored their dreams for Melbourne’s future. Their ideas ranged from airborne travel technologies to sustainable living solutions. Each child created a unique piece of art with clay tablets that were later incorporated into the sculpture.
Standing in front of the Futurescape Sculpture, you’ll notice two large basalt boulders split in two. Each side presents a different view of the “ideal” future city. One half depicts a vibrant daytime scene, while the other showcases a starry night sky. The sculpture’s colorful mosaics, crafted from tiles and glass, are truly mesmerizing.
The Futurescape Sculpture is not just a visual masterpiece but also a powerful symbol for the city’s collective imagination.
