Listen closely. The story of Furzedown Primary School begins not with grand pronouncements but with humble, temporary structures.
Let’s step back to 1911. London County Council recognized a pressing need for a school in this growing community. They decided on a temporary solution for 240 children. Two iron buildings emerged on this very site. They opened on March 3rd 1913. Locals quickly nicknamed it “The Tin School”.
The First World War significantly delayed further development at Furzedown Primary School. It wasn’t until 1924 that construction finally commenced on a permanent building. This new school cost approximately £18,000. It was designed to house 400 infants. It was conceived as a small bungalow building with a small yard on one side and lawns on the other.
The doors of the new building opened on April 17th 1928. Interestingly, Furzedown Primary School was initially designed as a school for children with asthma. The classroom walls were built in a concertinaed style. They could be opened to allow fresh air to circulate freely, or perhaps create a slight draught.
During the Second World War, Furzedown Primary School closed its doors. It served as a storage facility for paper and books. It reopened on August 30th 1948 as an Infant and Nursery School. Older children aged seven and above were sent to Mitcham Lane Junior School. This school is now known as Penwortham School. Additional hutted classrooms were added in September 1951 and 1973.
A significant reorganization occurred in 1970. Furzedown became an Infants and Junior School. A major rebuilding program was undertaken in 1990. Today, Furzedown Primary School welcomes boys and girls aged three to eleven.
In 2002, Furzedown Primary School underwent a major expansion. A new wing was added. It included seven new classrooms, a meeting room and infant toilets. This expansion allowed the school to increase its intake of children. It began the process of growing from a 1.5 form entry in 1970 to a two-form entry school.
An “Art Box” was added in 2012. It was a first-floor extension built above the old library. Furzedown Primary School reflects the community it serves today. It welcomes children from diverse backgrounds.
