Imagine plunging into the cool, clear water of Denmark’s deepest lake. That’s Furesø. Just 20 kilometers northwest of Copenhagen, Furesø isn’t just any lake. It’s a hotspot for outdoor swimming and offers stunning natural beauty.
Furesø has a rich history. It defined the southeastern border of the former Farum municipality. Privy Councillor Johan Sigismund Schulin built a small pleasure pavilion on Furesø Lake in the 18th century. It was called Frederiksdal Pavilion and designed by Nicolai Eigtved.
This lake is part of the Mølleå system. Furesø is Zealand’s third-largest lake, only surpassed by Arresø and Esrum Lake. It covers 941 hectares. The medium depth is 13.5 meters. Its maximum depth reaches 37.7 meters. That makes it Denmark’s deepest lake.
At Furesøbad, you can enjoy a fantastic aquatic experience. It has been a public swimming spot since the early 20th century. In 1974, Værløse and Farum municipalities built a joint water sports facility here. Furesøbad was heavily renovated in 2001. Today it’s a popular spot for locals and tourists.
During summer months, Furesøbad is a vibrant place. You can jump into the water from the bathing bridge. Or relax on the landscaped beach. Younger children can splash around in the paddling pool. If you need a break from the water, there’s a grassy playing area. Nearby, you will find plenty of forest and natural areas to explore.
Feeling hungry? You can visit the kiosk and Restaurant Furesøbad. The kiosk offers ice cream, soft drinks, and fast food. The restaurant boasts a spectacular view of Lake Furesø. They are known for burgers with fries. There are also barbecue areas available. Danes love a barbecue, so arrive early to secure a spot.
Furesø is also a prime location for fishing. Anglers seek predatory fish such as pike, perch, and zander. Zander is especially popular. The area at Jydehullet is a great place to start. In autumn, you can find perch near the creek outlet in 3-12 meters of water. Various coarse fish also inhabit the lake. Remember to obtain a valid national fishing license. You may also need a fishing permit from a local angling association.
Getting to Furesø is easy. A drive from central Copenhagen takes less than 30 minutes via Route 16. Onsite parking is available. Public transport takes about 40 minutes. Take the B-Train from Central Station to Farum Station. Then it’s a 20-minute walk. You can also cycle in just over an hour via Route C95.
