Have you ever felt the soft sand between your toes on a remote island? Welcome to Funadhoo a captivating island in the Maldives. Funadhoo is more than just a pretty face. It’s the administrative capital of Shaviyani Atoll. Did you know that until 1968 the atoll’s capital was actually Lhaimagu? Then the government moved the atoll office to Funadhoo. This decision transformed Funadhoo into the bustling center it is today.

Funadhoo’s history is intertwined with migration. In 1996 a project began to relocate people from Firubaidhoo to Funadhoo. Twenty-six houses were built and completed by 1997. This population shift added to Funadhoo’s growth and vibrancy.

Funadhoo’s geography is striking. It’s situated on Miladhummadulhu Atoll’s eastern rim. Funadhoo is one of the largest inhabited islands in the northern Maldives. It’s roughly 218 kilometers from Malé. The island itself is quite large 3000 meters long and 585 meters wide at its widest point. Interestingly the island has grown over the years. A separate island to the north naturally merged with Funadhoo.

Funadhoo boasts more than just a scenic landscape. The island features a lagoon known as Dhahfalhu. Over time this lagoon transformed into a mangrove habitat. The southern part Gabaa Kulhi is mainly muddy clay. It’s a haven for various wildlife including mud crabs and migratory birds. There’s also a lake Goni. Formed after the island merger Goni was once freshwater. The 2004 tsunami changed it. Now it’s home to Tilapia and wetland birds.

Funadhoo’s commitment to its people is evident in its healthcare. A health center was established in Lhaimagu in 1970. It moved to Funadhoo in 1971. Today it’s a well-equipped Atoll Hospital. It has a lab X-ray facilities and an operation theater. Specialized doctors serve the community.

Getting to Funadhoo is easier than ever. Since February 2020 Maldivian Airlines offers direct flights to Funadhoo Airport. Sea transport is also readily available. Speed ferries and cargo-passenger ferries connect Funadhoo to Malé and other islands.

Funadhoo’s story is one of growth adaptation and community. It’s a place where history nature and modern convenience blend seamlessly. It’s an island that truly captures the spirit of the Maldives. So soak it all in. Feel the unique charm of Funadhoo.
